Haydn’s “London” Symphony/Pergolesi: Stabat mater concert at Hollywood Bowl.
This was my first visit to Hollywood Bowl, and I managed to take a few photos. If you're driving from the east, I recommend you to leave your car at L.A. Zoo and to take the shuttle. It'll save your day from a nightmare of stack parking at Hollywood Bowl. The parking is free at L.A. Zoo and a round-trip for the Bowl Shuttle costs $5 per person. Park you car in Lot C and then wait for the bus(#672/departure begins 2.5 hours before concert) near the portable toilets/restrooms. After the concert, go straight down to the entrance area as fast as you can, and you'll find your shuttle waiting in the shuttle lots. Our shuttle arrived at its destination before 7pm, and the place was not crowded at all (except for the parking lots), and I think only half of the seats were filled with people. I thought there were way too many staffs (there was a staff in every aisle!) when most of the seats were empty. Anyway, the concert was a modest one for me since I was not familiar with Stabat mater. The acquaintance, who bought me a ticket, insisted that we must see Ann Hallenberg(alto) and Karina Gauvin(soprano) there because we don't get to see them often here in the states. By the way, their voices were absolutely beautiful, and I kept thinking they should have chosen Handel's arias over Stabat mater..... Anyway, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi is best known for his Stabat mater and died from tuberculosis when he was only 26. He was a Baroque composer, or more specifically, from Early Galante, which is considered to be a transition from Baroque to Classical era.
지난 주에 Haydn’s “London” Symphony/Pergolesi: Stabat mater 공연티켓이 생겨서 Hollywood Bowl 에 다녀왔습니다. 동쪽으로부터 드라이브해서 오는 경우 L.A. Zoo 에 주차를 하고 셔틀버스를 타는 편이 혼잡한 주차장에서 몇 시간을 소비하는 것보다 훨씬 수월합니다. Hollywood Bowl 주차장은 주차비가 20불 안팎이고 오는 순서대로 일렬로 세우는 주차장이라 앞에 있는 차가 나가지 않는 이상 몇 시간이고 계속 기다릴 수 밖에 없는 상황이 연출되죠. L.A. Zoo 파킹랏C 에 주차를 하고 셔틀버스가 공연 2시간 반 전부터 20분마다 출발을 하니 길가에 있는 간이 화장실이 세워져있는 곳에서 기다리면 됩니다. 참고로 셔틀버스는 한 사람 당 왕복티켓이 $5 이고 L.A. Zoo 주차는 무료입니다. 하튼 공연장은 예상외로 붐비지 않고 오히려 썰렁한 분위기였죠. 전체 반 정도의 좌석이 빈 것 같았는데 각 층 자리로 들어가는 입구마다 직원이 한 명 씩 서있고 공연장 안팎으로 관객수에 비해 직원들이 너무 많다는 생각이 들더군요. 아무래도 인기있는 프로그램이 아니여서 그런 듯 했습니다. 티켓을 구입해 준 지인이 Ann Hallenberg(alto) 와 Karina Gauvin(soprano)을 미국에서 볼 기회는 많지 않다며 꼭 봐야한다고 해서 왔는데 Pergolesi 의 Stabat mater 곡들은 자주 들어보지 못해서 그런지 평범하다는 느낌만 받았습니다. 헨델의 아리아를 선택했으면 좋았을텐데라는 생각이 들더군요. 그래도 아름다운 목소리를 들을 수 있어서 다녀온 보람은 있는 듯합니다. Giovanni Battista Pergolesi 는 Stabat mater 음악으로 잘 알려져있고 폐결핵으로 26살의 어린 나이에 생을 마감했다더군요. 바로크 작곡가인데 바로크 시대에서 고전주의로 넘어가는 시점인 Early Galante 시대의 작곡가입니다.
하튼 요즘 바로크 음악에 심취해있는 지인의 권유에 저도 틈틈이 듣고 있습니다만 특히 Handel 의 음악을 비롯해서 Leonardo Vinci (르네상스 시대의 레오나르도 다 빈치와의 연결고리를 찾자면 같은 이탈리아인이라는 사실 정도), Nicola Porpora 같은 작곡가들의 오페라를 적극 추천해서 듣고 있습니다. 바로크 오페라는 가사 내용을 알고 들어야 감동이 더해진다며 원어 가사와 뜻, 시대배경, 오페라 전문용어, 바로크 오페라 공연을 주로하는 오페라가수들까지 다 파악하고 있는 지인! 여하튼 Vinci 의 음악은 꼭 감상해보시길...진정 시대를 앞서간 작곡가입니다... 그리고 요즘 소위 잘나가는 카운터테너들이라면 Philippe Jaroussky, Andreas Scholl, David Hansen, Valer Barna-Sabadus 등등이 있는데 지인은 Franco Fagioli 를 최고로 뽑더군요. 저도 같은 생각입니다만 몇몇 혹자들은 Fagioli 의 다이내믹한 표정을 극도로 꺼리긴 합니다. ^^; 관련 동영상을 올려봅니다. 그럼 즐감하시길 바랍니다. ^^
